Fishy vaginal odor after sex is an embarrassing but very common concern for many women. It’s also a sign that your vaginal flora is out of balance, and may need to be treated.
Can sperm cause fishy odor?
Bacterial vaginosis (BV) is an imbalance of bacteria that produces a fishy odor and abnormal vaginal discharge. BV usually develops after penis-to-vaginal intercourse without a condom, but it can also occur in people with a history of genital herpes or other sexually transmitted diseases.
Other infections that cause a smell in the vagina include Herpes genitalis, trichomoniasis, and rectovaginal fistula. Getting tested for any of these conditions is important.
Excessive sweating, especially while exercising, can be another reason for a strong fishy vaginal odor. Always clean your vulva well after a workout using gentle soap and water, patting it dry.
Yeast overgrowth in the vagina is another potential cause of an unpleasant odor. It can occur at any time, but it’s most common after your period or sex, when blood and semen mix with the vaginal secretions.
A healthy vagina odor is mild, but it’s important to recognize any changes or new odors that you may be experiencing. If you notice a change in the odor or it becomes stronger, consult your doctor to determine what’s causing the odor.
In many cases, a fishy odor is nothing to worry about and will pass on its own. However, if you notice it accompanied by itching or other symptoms, like redness or pain with intercourse, seek medical attention immediately.
